Interview

  • Bring presentation- may be website, including show reel, physical portfolio.

  • Could do separate power point.

  • Physical portfolio more for fashion.

  • Any physical work, pieces you could bring in.

  • Dressed professionally.

  • Depends on job role you are applying for.

  • Say what kind of job you are hoping to get when you graduate.

  • Know background info on job role.

  • This informs critical essay it will be a reflection on the presentation.

  • You do not get assessed on your presentation but you do get assessed on the critical evaluation.

  • There is a sheet that the panel will be filling in as a feedback sheet.

  • Look fitting for the job role- fashionable.

  • 15 minute presentation split it into 10 then questions or leave time for them to ask questions.

  • Business cards, CV, Presentation.

  • Deal with any problems including technical calmly and have a backup.

  • Just going to do a quick presentation then take some questions?

  • Show critical evaluation skills and learn from that.

 

CV

  • Try and stick to one page but it probably will go over.

  • Employment is different to work experience.

  • Make sure it is short but eye catching because employers will have limited time.

  • If you do not state what you have done recently they will not assume you have.

  • Presentation is important as we are in a creative industry.

  • Spend time on logos, business cards etc. it should be to the same format.

  • Make the promotional material quality.

  • Make sure formatting and font etc. is up to scratch.

Invoice

  • Nothing to do with interview but this should be ready for hand in.

  • Bank details.

  • Reference number.

  • Begin from a number randomly that is not a low number as this shows you are new to the business etc. then carry on chronologically from that point.

  • Two points of reference one you have and one company have.

  • Date- date you are sending the invoice.

  • When you did the job- date of production.

  • Make-Up artist services- reference it as that then it does not matter what you are working as within this.

  • Put Production Company then work.

  • Then put cost of how much per day/ hour etc. as the agreed cost.

  • Agree with them the daily fee- figure out the day hours. Companies have different day schedules for example 8 hours, 12 hours etc.

  • You need to have confirmation of this in writing so that there is evidence of this.

  • Send an email after if you take a phone call and say to confirm I am working… at …. A day etc.

  • AA route planner tells you how many miles to location if paying for commute.

  • Make sure they specify if they will pay for food, stay, travel etc. – sustenance.

  • Your address.

  • Their address.

  • A name of someone that you can contact if you do not get paid- the person you made deal with etc.

  • Email address of person.

  • Have to bring passport to jobs etc. just to prove who you are and that you can work.

  • Box money/ kit money- dependant on whether they have agreed this. Does not necessarily come with invoice.

  • Pay by date.

  • Often is a four week turnaround. – payment due within 28 days.

  • Attach all receipts.

  • Total at the bottom.

 

Tax

  • Excel spread sheet.

  • Accountant is person who tells you about taxes etc. there are ways to get around paying certain tax.

  • Outcomings and incomings in your freelance business.

  • Everything you buy associated to the business is an outgoing.

  • Everything that comes in to the business is the incoming.

  • Supplier- anyone you have bought something from.

  • Tax laws change every year.

  • You get a percentage back of everything you put on the sheet and justify why it is needed to run the business and no one else can tell you if you justify that or not.

  • The tax man will go through all books with a fine tooth comb so they can make sure it is not dodgy.

  • They are not stupid if you claim for coffee on the day you were off it does not count and the tax man will.

  • If you are away maybe in a foreign country and someone is paying you for that job and you need a big coat etc. because you are working on a job in a cold country so you can claim for that.

  • They have systems that can check.

  • Keep receipts for everything and keep in date order etc.

  • January have to hand in tax form.

  • Section of your bills if you are working for business purposes in a room of your house- if you have a house that has five rooms you can claim a fifth of the household bills if you are working in one of those rooms for business purposes.

  • Dates, supplier, reference.

  • Take 20% off or 25% off everything you earn and that way you can cover your taxes.

  • Once earn over 60,000 you need to be VAT registered.

  • Be careful about car insurance because they may assume you will be driving around famous people which means you are more at risk.

  • OUTGOINGS; Headings on form; fuel, motor maintenance, insurance, travel, post print stationary, meals, rent- for work, phone, consumables, utilities, legal accountancy, kit (makeup/ hair etc.), professional subs (society of makeup artists, subscriptions all of makeup artist relations), repairs and renewals (in work space- laptop, lightbulb), bank charges (anything bank charges you), cleaner (isopropl, cleaner products), sundries (anything you do not have a column for).

  • INGOINGS; dates, companies, same reference number as invoices, fee (your work they are paying for), expenses (things they have payed for). Outstanding column can go into incoming so you can see that they still owe you money.

  • Show everything on invoices and put them on ingoing and outgoing.

  • Only need gross, you do not need vat and net until we earn over 60,000.
