Creative Writing

Various creative writing exercises were used in a lesson to allow us to explore our minds and begin to relate creative writing to our work since this can often inform a make-up transformation.

The first exercise focused on thought processes, it aimed to allow the mind to flow into its own thoughts we documented a list of words with anything that was on our mind my list began:

Sleep, Tired, Work, Project, Coffee, Breakfast, Food, Dinner, Hot, Summer, Beach, Sea.

We next used an exercise that consisted of folding a piece of paper into four sections, In a group of four we each had one section to write down a certain characteristic of the character we imagined in our heads. We then put these characteristics together no matter how bizarre they were to give us all an idea of the person or being.

This allowed us to create an 80 year old character that wears a hat and has peroxide hair I named ours Evelyn I gave her characteristics that included:

Class

  • Middle Class

  • Gets quirky and stylish clothes from charity shops rather than branded clothes.

Youth

  • She is young at heart

  • She is stylish and wears flattering makeup.

Personality

  • She is kind hearted

  • Has warm glowing cheeks.

  • Is adventurous.

  • Has wrinkles showing her age because of her busy life.

We next created a poem/ piece of writing describing our character I wrote:

Hair detatched from the picture,

A colourless canvas, with a peroxide glow,

Icy grey eyes, staring beyond,

A stylish orbit lay on her head,

Grasping onto record of youth.

The appearance and personality is how you defone a character since we react to objects and people. This is important for make-up artists as when designing make-up looks after being given a treatment or script there are key aspects of the characters personality or appearance that must be taken into consideration when designing. It is also vital to think about how to portray the persons personality in their looks and in their make-up.
