Trichotillomania Still Life Shoot
I began by cutting up some large inexpensive hair donuts, they worked great to pad out the shape of the brain underneath.
I sewed a halo of wire around the middle section which held the shape and formation so I could easily sew on the hair.
To create the part on the back I wrapped the hair around the base instead of plaiting so that the texture was visibly different, just like a real brain.

Trichotillomania Campaign
A photographer I have worked with before a few times approached me about creating some hair work for her still life project about trichotillomania and the mental effects it has. I was instantly interested since I suffered with it during secondary school. This is one of the things I made for the shoot and it is a brain made out of hair. This is an unedited version so there are a few gaps in the hair and loose strands but that was bound to happen on the commute. It was great to work on something that I had creative freedom with and something that was based solely around hair. She did not know anything about how I could create what she was asking for so I began brainstorming, I bought around four large donut hair rings and began cutting and sewing until I had created a base shape for my brain. I then plaited what felt like hundreds of plaits secured with tight black elastic bands, I then carefully placed the plaits in a wiggly motion in random areas of the brain to create the illusion similar to a brain structure. The base of the brain needed to be a slightly different texture to the main part of the brain so this was wrapped and sewn into place. It was something different to work on and I enjoyed the creative side a lot. I also made a weft of hair which I glued onto the magnet with a glue gun, can be seen in second image.
