Initial Designs
I knew I wanted to focus on either birds or on reptiles so the two initial designs are at the top here. This first initial design focused on an up do with handmade hair feathers heading upwards from the hair, I am yet unsure about the colours I am focusing the look on as I will eventually base a bird to focus the look around so at the moment I just chose a vibrant colour as I will be hoping to stick to bright colours. Having done this design I did wonder whether the design could be made better with actual wings I liked the idea of the wings coming out of the head.
Here is my other initial design focused around reptiles, I created the hair look as if it was reptile skin. Again I am unsure about what colours to do the design with as eventually I will focus on one particular animal. I do like the idea of creating reptile skin with hair however I began looking at birds of paradise which really interests me and I want to focus on the bright colours which I feel I could do better focusing the project around birds.
Second Design
The refined design I did following the last and further research was this one. I decided to design the hair like spread woings as this seamed the most interesting and makes a statement of the hair piece. I really like this idea, I kept the eyes blue on this one as I have some ideas of the birds I am going to focus my work on, the most likely one is the ribbon tailed astrapia bird which is many colours of blue which is why I have slightly refined the colourings but left the hair frame open as I am not sure how much colour impact I want to make however I do really like the idea of a very colourful hair frame but this will come along with my research.
This design meant that there was a solid supporting structure with more wire at the base since the wire was quite bendy and lightweight it needed more structure on the bottom section. It made more sense to have a supporting wire under the very top wing wire to fully secure the wings and be able to attach feathers on top laying over the net between the two wires rather than have the wings completely dangling down of one thin wire. I also started to think after the first designs how I could allow the wings to move like real wings and I designed the part in the middle that would allow the wing wire sit in there, be secured but also be able to move without falling off.
Out of the four designs above I picked the best and practical bits from each and came up with a design that I knew would work with what I was trying to create.
Frame Designs
Final Design
My research and testing of products and hair allowed me to come up with this design as my final design. Knowing how the feathers will look through deciding on the correct hair etc. and working out a hair frame design that was the best option allowed me to design this hair piece and tests allowed me to have a clear understanding of how it would look. This design was what I took into the final shoot make-up session and I am happy I have achieved final images that reflect this design. I like the vibrancy of the colour and choosing the correct bird to focus on allowed me to create this make-up.
