Wefting Hair
The video above shows the weaving technique to make hair extensions, weaving can be used to make all kinds of hairpieces and even eyelashes. He also shows the technique of mixing hair colour to create a multi colour weft in order to fit a persons hair colour extactly.
Weaving makes a long weft of hair that is either folded and sewn into straight sections of hair or marteau, used for making waves, or is made into a round hairpiece or chignon that is used for adding fullness or dressing to curls and other period styles.
Wefted hair extentions can be bought in all different colours and for different purposes. The hair extensions readily available are 90% of the time machine made therefore less time consuming to make and much cheaper to buy. Hand made wefts are much more expensive to buy since more time has been invested in making them. They are generally made with three weaving silks often with weaving wire that allows the wefts to be bent into a shape. The first picture to the left shows the making of hair wefts and the different knots that are used. The second picture shows a picture of two small wefts and the hair used to make them, it also explains a few ways of wefting that can be used.
This book explains the weaving process and how to set up the weaving sticks. I already knew this as we got taught weaving in first year so I just used these books as a recap to refresh my memory.
One thing I did need to recap on was the knots. it had been a while since I had weaved any hair and I could not quite rememer the different knots and for what purpose so this book helped to remind me the differenced between the three silks and two silks, and different wefting knots.
The picture to the side shows how wefts can be made into hairpieces. This particular hair piece is called a switch, it is unnessesary to me however it does show how versitile the wefts are and the amount of different techniques that can be used to add additional hair to the head. The other video above is another example of hand made wefts. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lH8jBcYn3PU
